How was she able to do a proper RDL if she didn't understand hip extension? Or was it just hip extension in more complex movements.

This problem illustrates why my junior T&F coach started all of the young athletes with plyometrics before we began serious weight training. He wanted to see us perform basic athletic movements so that he could determine whether we were able to actually move correctly and to see what he had to work with. These things are especially important in T&F because those movements often actually are the sports rather than just training exercises.

Helgi,

I misread what you were trying to say completely and changed less to more. I changed it back. Sorry about that.

Thanks Lyle.

There's something strange about the way my post came out and I think it should read: ...has also stalled and squats and deadlifts much less than he should..

I.e. he has stalled and lifts less than he should. He also can't jump. BTW, he is white.

My apologies, Lyle. I shouldn't stir the drink like that, so I hope that you will forgive me if my post was way out of line. I appreciate what a fantastic resource you are and should learn to think a bit more before I type.

Ivan: Absolutely not. The knee flexion that occurs in sprinting is more of a reaction force from ground contact and the majority of propulsion comes from hip extension. Some coaches feel that leg curls simply predispose sprinters to hamstring pulls and few use them.

Duxx: I agree 100%. Different athletes 'hear' things differently and sometimes what the coach is saying and what the athlete is hearing are different.

Matt: no comment.

Helgi: Glad I could be of some use. I misread your post and changed it back to the original.

Lyle, do you think it's important to do leg curls to improve sprinting?. Does the hams work in sprint as a knee flexors, or only as hip extensors?.

Thank you.

Amazing. I have a friend who has also stalled and squats and dealifts much less than he should. I immediately asked him to do a couple of jumps for me. Lo and behold, he jumps just like that! I blame it on a diet of leg curls and extensions for years before I got him to squat and deadlift. I'm going to have him do some jumping, concentrating on hip extension.

Great piece, Lyle. I definitely enjoyed a bit of the insight into the coaching side of things.

I couldn't help but chuckle a bit reading the following

"I think if more coaches were honest, they’d admit that most of what they’ve learned or figured out about training people came from one of two places:

 1. People smarter than them.
 2. Lucky accidents.

Rather than trying to appear as if they figured out the secrets of the universe (available for only 3 easy payments of $77.77) all by themselves."

It made me think of a certain Scottish individual who often seems to pose concepts as if he were the mastermind behind them when I often get the feeling that is anything but the case.
