And as you mentioned here elsewhere, the higher intensity may result in less hunger over the same time. So that can multiply the beneficial net effect several fold.

My words:

"This study has never been replicated and the other studies examining the topic have not found nearly the same effect. Perhaps only experienced lifters can train hard enough to make EPOC significant. Perhaps the study was simply a fluke and the measured increase in metabolic rate didn’t actually occur. Without replication, nobody can really say."

What does that last sentence say? Because when 1 study says one thing and the other 3-4 say another, I say the first study is flawed. But I'm still open to the idea. Put differently: I dismissed nothing. You just read it wrong.

I think it's a bit dodgy to dismiss a study showing that weight training had a significant post-session energy-burning effect simply because it's just one study. If it were just one study saying that the effect were insignificant, I think you'd not hesitate to accept it. Let's not have confirmation bias, that way Broscience lies.

<i>"Clearly from a real-world perspective, this type of training ‘works’. [...] But a question is whether the high intensity interval types of programs are actually working via the mechanism of EPOC (as is usually claimed)."</i>

That's an academic question. I agree it's an interesting one. But most of us are interested in results, not the exact mechanism by which the results occur. If it's stupid and it works, it ain't stupid.
