Lyle,

great article as always. i've read that caffeine inhibits the absorption of certain micronutrients and just wanted to know if this is bs?

i take my multivitamin upon waking up and usually have a couple cups of coffee afterwards (all this hours before 1st meal)

FUNNY . . . I am a member of the BFFM Inner Circle, and I have been trawling the net this morning looking for extra info on this subject, and came across your article - and was really impressed by the depth and scope of the study. THEN I realised that you are the same LYLE that Tom Venuto so often quotes on the Inner Circle . . . no WONDER your research is so concise, detailed, and accurate, and BALANCED. If I went back to the IC, no doubt I could find a LINK to this very study - perhaps I should have gone there in the first place :P Thanks!

So long as the herbals have been standardized to provide the same 200 mg of active ingredient, there shouldn't be any difference. However, often herbal forms of a compound contain other, err, compounds, that cause issues (For example yohimbe as a herb vs. yohimbine HCL has a different effect even at the same effective dose).

It could be lots of things and I haven't delved into it. Calcium balance in the body is controlled by a tremendous number of things. Certainly phosphoric acid has been implicated as an issue, perhaps sodas are a problem b/c they replace milk in the diet. There are just a lot of confounds, often there being an interaction between nutrient X and total calcium intake. Protein is a good example. High protein and low calcium leads to calcium loss from the body but high protein and high calcium intake leads to protein gain. You can't ever look at a single factor in isolation.

Lyle, this is another good article. Thanks! On the bit about calcium deficiency "High doses of caffeine can also ... cause problems with osteoporosis." You talk a lot about coffee here, but I've heard cola (besides being a chemical shit storm) may be the culprit in this case, because it contains phosphoric acid, not because it contains caffeine. Maybe the same is true of coffee (I admittedly haven't read up on it)? Do you know? Perhaps a caffeine pill is the best way to go in any case ...written as I drink a Coke Zero.

Unless it was right at the very beginning of the fast, liver glycogen will be mostly emptied so it won't matter.

Great article, and discussion, thanks!
But I still have one question: if caffeine promotes the breakdown of glycogen in the liver, and its release as glucose, can you drink coffee while fasting, and still be (really) fasting?
Thanks for any comments!

So, basically, all those that say drinking coffee on a ketogenic diet (I am about to start a CKD) are talking bullsh!t?!

Please say it is so Lyle, because while I feel perhaps my 6-7 cups per day could be lowered to 3-4 without too much problem - the idea of having to give it up because it would "throw me out of ketosis" is appalling.

So, you are 100% sure that coffee will NOT throw me out of Ketosis?

(I know I know, I just need some reassurance after all the ketosis-coffee scare stories I have been reading)
