Lyle,

I prefer to get most of my calories from "real" food. But I can imagine one day people will end up having their kitchen shelves just filled with containers of prepackaged meals and powders and...wait a minute....most people live like that today!

On the serious side--while I do supplement my nutrition with protein powder, your article is really put together well for anyone interested in reigning in their wild diets and start eating right. Since calories are a form of energy: too many calories and not enough of an outlet for this energy (exercise) will just result in getting bigger waists.

Lyle,
Is it possible for you to give some guidelines on what foods to eat during a long competition day to give you the most energy?
I follow the LG approach and am also powerlifting. I was wondering if you could give some feedback on what foods give you the most bang for your buck in terms of providing you with the necessary macronutrients and keeping your energy levels up throughout the day.
During my wrestling days, long tournaments would be filled with PB&Banana&Honey, Fruit (apples/oranges/bananas), and always ended up with binges on all of the food that was being offered for the spectators because it looked so damn good.
Also, any reccomendations for pre/post workout would be much appreciated.
Thanks Lyle,
Jordan

Pretty good article and well explained. Just wanted to point something out. While making comments about Americans being too dumb to understand metric, you state that 11,340 joules or 11.3 megajoules is the amount of energy for a standard male. I think you meant to say 11.3 kilojoules.

Again, informative article. I just thought it was kind of funny making comments about lack of understanding of metric and then using the wrong metric prefix.
