Im guessing this article is a few years old when BodPod was newer. BodPod site doesnt list the price because facilities purchase it and charge whatever they like. I have heard pricies from $20 up to $100. I have 3 near me- mom and pop gym $20, YMCA (machine owned by local hosp and this machine is used by local NFL team)$25 and university $30. I have used it twice in 4 weeks and like to have the information. The accuracy of any method can be argued but I'm not training or competing so whatever figure I get is fine by me. I would just say what ever method you choose stick with it as you progress. If you have to change in midstream and the numbers are off it will frustrate you.

Just my 2 cents- at my college using the Bod Pod costs between $20-25; and I'd argue its accessible to anyone in the vicinity. Yes, its a research school, but its not an unreasonable price.

It's accuracy is to be questioned however, and calipers are much more affordable in the long run.

The BodPod is actually very cheap, at a local Gold's Gym they charge $29, and that's for non-members.

Lyle, do you have any idea how accurate the BodPod is compared to the other methods?

If anyone is interested in the C120 calipers mentioned, they are available on Amazon.com for less than $16: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NN9SDO/ref=oss_product

My body compositions scales are confusing me, the numbers don't equal 100%, i added my water, muscle, fat and bone and it equals 134% are my scales broken or is this a normal reading?

The BOD POD is as accurate as hydrostatic weighing. It is less expensive than DXA and does not use radiation to complete the test. DXA is available at hospitals, high end spa's, and research centers. Where are your references to how these technologies were validated? DXA has not been validated independently of the companies that make them. If you do a literature search you will find a growing number of studies questioning DXA for measuring body composition.

Great article. I have been getting calipered at the YMCA. It is free and I found one guy who does it for me all the time and is pretty exacting. Did it as I got kinda light (end of my diet from 230 to 160). Now, I continue to add strength and will check it every couple months or so. (I am allowing addition of a pound/month to my maintenance weight to compensate for strength gains. See the bf% check as a way to watch if I am getting too fat (or the happy converse).

Really I see this as a "double check" more for safety/security, since it is evident from the mirror what my leanness is. Also, checking waistline (pants fit) is a reaity check for porking out. although I actually think my "skin" is a little bit shrinking and/or abdomen shrinking even at maintenance...or it could be psychology...but my 32s are fitting loose. Probably rate a 31 now.

Do you know if, other than genetics, disease, and drugs, there are lifestyle/dietary factors that can influence where fat tends to be stored (visceral/subcutaneous)?

Not sure if my question has any practical application, just wondering.
